Invasive cardiac surgery of any kind can not only be very traumatic physically but also it can lead to high levels of anxiety and psychological distress. The Cardiac Prehabilitation (Prehab) pilot programme has been designed to provide a framework for cardiac patients prior to their operation, to eat nutritionally well, exercise within limits and reduce addictions such as alcohol and smoking so that they are as ‘match-fit’ physically as possible, going into their surgery. Additionally, the programme will offer psychological support to ensure that patients’ potential anxiety and depression is being managed, leading to a quicker and more lasting recovery from surgery, both physically and mentally.
