Heartbeat unveils precious display of 3D hearts that have revolutionised cardiac surgery on over 100 babies and children

Southampton-based cardiac charity Heartbeat has unveiled its 3D Heart Cabinet which showcases a pioneering initiative that is transforming the way complex heart procedures are planned and performed.

The 3D Heart Cabinet, now showcased at the University Hospital Southampton’s Heartbeat Education Centre, is believed to be the only one of its kind in the world.

It was unveiled at an event this week that was attended by medical professionals, supporters and key stakeholders of the project, as well as heart patients and those who are associated with the charity Heartbeat.

Inside, the cabinet holds an array of over 100 intricately crafted 3D models, each an exact replica of a patient’s heart, produced from detailed CT and MRI scans. These state-of-the-art 3D-printed hearts provide surgeons with an invaluable tool to plan complex procedures with greater precision, ultimately reducing the number of invasive surgeries required and improving overall patient care.

Heartbeat CEO Mark Ind, said: “This cutting-edge display offers a fascinating insight into how 3D printing technology is enhancing cardiac surgery and embodies our mission to support pioneering advancements in cardiac care. Seeing first-hand how these 3D heart models will aid surgical planning and improve patient outcomes is truly inspiring. This is a significant step forward in ensuring the best possible care for those undergoing life-changing procedures.”

Dr Tara Bharucha, Consultant Fetal and Paediatric Cardiologist at University Hospital Southampton, said: "The ability to examine an exact 3D replica of a patient’s heart before surgery allows us to plan procedures with an unprecedented level of accuracy. Ultimately, it leads to safer surgeries and better outcomes for our patients. This initiative is an incredible advancement in cardiac care and we are proud to show it off with this fantastic display at the Heartbeat Education Centre."

Mr. Nicola Viola, Consultant Congenital Cardiac Surgeon, expressed his enthusiasm for the innovation, stating, " These Hearts are what we’ve been working for, for many years.  They provide an opportunity to conceptualise and navigate complex cardiac conditions before entering the operating room—this is surgical training at its best!"
