Newport pub’s new landlords pledge to raise funds for heart charity

Just days into their tenure as landlords of the Prince of Wales pub in Newport, Isle of Wight, Steve Wheatley and Sally Hills have decided to make Heartbeat the pub’s charity of the year.

Steve commented: “Supporting Heartbeat just seemed like a good idea. We know that a few people who use the pub and have had heart problems were treated at University Hospital Southampton. In fact, my own father recently had a heart attack, so this is a cause that’s really important to me.”

Steve and Sally, who took over the Prince of Wales in June, have big plans for events that local people can get behind to raise extra funds for Heartbeat.

“We are holding a charity day on 10th September, including a quiz night,” announced Steve. “We’re looking forward to welcoming customers old and new and raising as much as we can for Heartbeat. For every drink sold on the day we’ll donate a percentage of the cost to the charity.”

Heartbeat helps babies, children and adults with cardiovascular disease, primarily by supporting the work of the Wessex Cardiac Unit at University Hospital Southampton.

Tanya Harder, Community Fundraising and Marketing Manager at Heartbeat, mentioned: “We are thrilled to have the support of Steve, Sally and their customers at the Prince of Wales. As Steve knows from his own experience, having friends or family members with heart disease is worrying for anyone. Heartbeat is here to make sure patients from the Isle of Wight and all across the South of England receive the best possible care and their families get all the support they need.”
